Former Hakodate Post Office
The postal service in Hakodate was started in 1872. The first public post office here in Hakodate opened at the Kaikanjo
building in Omachi. The custom department inspected ship's cargo and admitted tourists to Hakodate.
In 1875 the post office was named the "Hakodate Post Office" and after that time, the place of the Postal service was moved
several times. In 1911 a new building was constructed in Omachi which was used for post office and other government departments.
The building was sold to a private individual in 1962.It is valuable now as one of the typical Meiji period western style buildings in Hakodate.
