Dr.Clark and Sapporo Agricultural College
Soon after Meiji Restoration, Japan started its stride toward modernization of the country. In order to achieve this goal, the need of developing the large but then futile land of Hokkaido was urgent. This is why the government pressed for the establishment of Sapporo Agricultural College (the present Hokkaido University.) Dr. William Smith Clark was invited as the advisor for the school. Dr. Clark was born in Massachusetts, U.S.A in 1826. The records show that he was chosen as one of the best honored college students in the U.S. He was loved by people. Dr. Clark was in the post of the president of Massachusetts State Agricultural College when he was invited by Japan's government.
Dr. Clarkfs unyielding spirit as pioneer
Dr. Clark arrived in Sapporo at the age of 50 on July 31, 1876. In August, 1876, the school was founded as the first advanced institute of agriculture in Japan. He promoted the education with the philosophy of "Frontier development" and "Academic excellence." Although he stayed in Hokkaido for a relatively short period, he left great educational legacy in Japan in many fields. "Boys, be ambitious!" People remember the last speech of Dr. Clark to Japanese students. This famous word represents his educational philosophy.
The spirit of Dr. Clark goes across countries and ages.
Message by Ms. Debora. Y Clark (Dr. Clark's 5th descendant)
My ancestor Dr. Clark worked hard teaching people across countries. His goal was to realize the idea that individuals must help each other for the benefit of society. It is pleasure and honor of our family that the spirit of Dr. Clark was succeeded by Clark Memorial International High School. If he were alive, he would say.
"Boys, be ambitious to work for the benefit of the international society, where people may live in peace."
